The local vet ran every test they could and conducted a sedated exam but was still at a loss. Vet ruled out allergies, didn't think it was related to lyme (dog is positive for lyme) treated for mange but that didn't seem to do it, and prescribed a round of steroids. An overnight stay a U-Penn that included more tests including a cat scan failed to reveal the cause of the discomfort. U Penn was pretty confident it wasn't cancer or a tumor in the brain or nose which made me feel better but the dog is still itchy. He seems to have gotten use to the discomfort and unless it gets worse or another sympton emerges I suppose I have done all I can.
